Applicants who expect to be absent from the United States for an extended period of time due to certain types of employment can preemptively file with USCIS to preserve their residency for naturalization purposes. The applicant requests permission to be absent from the United States without breaking his or her residence. If USCIS approves, the applicant, spouse and any dependent unmarried children in the household will qualify for the same benefits.

The application with USCIS must be filed before the applicant has been absent from the US for a continuous period of one year. Additionally, the applicant must first have been physically present in the US for an uninterrupted period of at least one year after lawful admission as a permanent resident.

If the application is approved, the time spent outside the country is not considered to break the residency; however, the applicant must still meet the 18 or 30 month physical presence requirement for naturalization.
